We are thrilled to announce that Thor's Trees has been awarded a scope of works by Thames Water and Browne Construction to undertake essential tree removal along the route of a major water pipe running under Wick Woodland, a 30-year-old woodland located to the south of Hackney Marshes. This project is of paramount importance as it addresses the critical issue of pipeline integrity and the safety of water supply infrastructure in the area.
In October 2020, the presence of trees in Wick Woodland was identified as a contributing factor to the failure of the water pipe, leading to extensive flooding and disruptions to water supply in the region. Recognising the urgency and necessity of the situation, Thames Water initiated a comprehensive plan to address this concern.
The proposed works will involve the removal of approximately 80 to 110 trees with a diameter at waist height exceeding 150mm within a 10-meter corridor. The goal of this tree removal is to safeguard the pipeline and ensure the continued reliability of water supply to the community.
Before embarking on this important project, we have meticulously planned and consulted with the London Borough of Hackney and the London Wildlife Trust Consultancy. A preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) of the site was conducted by London Wildlife Trust Consultancy to assess the potential ecological impact of the tree removal. The PEA concluded that the proposed works are unlikely to result in significant adverse ecological impacts, provided that a Tree Works Management Plan is put in place.
Additionally, we are committed to enhancing other parts of Wick Woodland as part of our environmental stewardship efforts. This means that while we are removing trees to ensure the safety of the pipeline, we are also dedicated to preserving and improving the overall health of the woodland ecosystem.
