We're delighted to announce another successful infrastructure project completion to kick off 2024!!!!

In the heart of Hackney, nestled within the lush greenery of Wick Woodland, a remarkable project recently came to fruition. This collaborative endeavour brought together key personnel from Thames Water, J Browne Construction, London Wildlife Trust, Russell Miller, and Hackney Borough Council, and it has proven to be a resounding success. The project's primary goal was to secure the integrity of a major water pipe that runs beneath the woodland, which had suffered a catastrophic failure in 2020, causing widespread flooding and water supply disruptions.

Following on from the successfully winning the contract with Thames Water, we are pleased to announce another successful project completed by our team of expert tree surgeons. At the outset, the challenge seemed daunting. Especially with the local press reporting to the Hackney community of the 'Felling of 80 trees in Hackney Wick Woodland'; a cherished natural haven that had matured over three decades, had become intertwined with an essential underground water pipeline. The presence of trees within the woodland was suspected to have played a role in the pipe's failure, necessitating their removal. However, a delicate balance had to be struck between protecting this precious green space and ensuring the reliability of the water supply for the local community.

The project's success can be attributed to the collaborative spirit of the teams involved. Key players, including Thames Water, J Browne Construction, London Wildlife Trust, Russell Miller, and Hackney Borough Council, came together to tackle the complex challenge.

The journey commenced with a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) conducted by London Wildlife Trust Consultancy. This assessment determined that, with the implementation of a Tree Works Management Plan, the tree removal necessary for pipeline protection would not result in significant adverse ecological impacts. The stage was set for responsible and sensitive tree removal.

The tree operations and maintenance plan, meticulously crafted by Russell Miller, outlined a comprehensive method for Thames Water & Thor's Trees as contractors. It emphasised ecological sensitivity, minimising harm while maximising habitat enhancement along the way-leave. Biodiversity Net Gain calculations were incorporated to ensure that any loss of biodiversity due to tree removal would be offset by enhancements elsewhere in Wick Woodland.

A key aspect of the plan was the long-term management of the way-leave route, to be undertaken by contractors and volunteers. This forward-looking approach aimed to prevent future pipeline compromise, facilitate quick access for Thames Water in case of further pipe failures, and support the ecological balance of Wick Woodland.

Throughout the project, open lines of communication with the local community and stakeholders ensured that everyone's concerns and values were considered. The collaborative effort united the community in a shared vision for environmental preservation and infrastructure security.

As the project neared completion, it was evident that the hard work and dedication of all parties involved had paid off. The water pipeline was safeguarded, and Wick Woodland emerged even stronger, with a greater potential for biodiversity and resilience. The project was completed within the tight schedule set by Thames Water, highlighting the efficiency and commitment of Thor's Trees.

This success story in Hackney's Wick Woodland serves as a beacon of hope for similar projects across London and the South-East of England. It showcases the possibility of achieving ecological harmony while maintaining essential infrastructure. As we look ahead, Thames Water, J Browne Construction, London Wildlife Trust, Russell Miller, and Hackney Borough Council eagerly anticipate future projects that will continue to protect our environment and secure our communities.

Together, we are building a greener, safer, and more resilient future for all.

What Is Tree Surgery and Why Do Trees Need It?Β

Trees are remarkably good at looking after themselves - they've been at it for about 370 million years, after all.
